Thanks to the pervasive pajama trend and our growing desire to stay in bed all day, robe dressing has officially become a thing. This year, we've watched the humble bathrobe go from terrycloth bathroom staple to insouciant statement piece with designers and celebrities alike thinking up acceptable ways for us to wear our absorbent dressing gowns in public.

The bath wonders were first spotted in September at Vaquera when the New York-based label showed a giant terrycloth robe as a gown, complete with a train and a fancy bubble hem. But instead of slippers — or shower shoes (for all you camp-goers) — the fluffy, marshmallow-looking confection was paired with practical white loafers. 

Next up, Versace showed a silky robe loosely draped over a swimsuit and accessorized it with a towel wrap, sunnies and pink sandals during its Spring 2018 tribute spectacle. Of course, Donatella's take on the just-got-out-of-the-shower trend involved a colorful all-over butterfly print in a luxe fabric. 

Off the runway, red carpet and high-fashion glossies continued to prove that the post-shower look wasn't just a cute coincidence. First came Rihanna's December cover of VogueParis, which featured the singer-turned-beauty mogul lounging with her hair wrapped up in a black and orange towel turban. Then, Rita Ora famously wore a white bathrobe from Palomo Spain's Spring 2018 collection, a matching towel for her hair and pounds of diamonds to the MTV Europe Music Awards. Perhaps her bubblebath ran long and she couldn't be bothered to wear an actual dress or she just wanted to prove a valid point that you don't have to sacrifice comfort for opulence — and we agree. 

So how does one pull off this super lax trend without looking like your fire alarm went off as you were mid-shampoo? Perpetual Netflix-and-chillers will be thrilled to learn that the bath-to-street trend is rather simple. 

Let's start from the bottom and work our way up: Steer clear of a statement shoe and instead stick to a frill-free loafer, mule or sandal. There are plenty of wedges with transparent straps that are slightly reminiscent of plastic shower curtains, which are naturally a perfect fit for your robe. Handbags don't sit well with the loose-fitting sleeves so leave your bucket bags, clutches and fanny packs at home. (Thankfully, you'll have pockets.) Jewelry is key, because without any neck or ear adornments you may run the risk of looking like you are waiting for someone to come do your makeup instead of intentionally living your life in terrycloth. We suggest taking cues from Ora's glam robe moment by putting on long, sparkly ear danglers or larger-than-life hoops, then adding some shine to the neck area with a few layers of diamonds.
